Dr. Oliva has taught courses in French, Italian and linguistics across Romance Languages. While his primary area of specialization remains Pedagogy, SLA, Romance Linguistics and Intercomprehension, he has taught advanced courses on topics as varied as Language for Professionals, Mapping the Francophonie Contemporaine, Francophone Female Figures or the History of French and Italian Gastronomies.
Over the period 2012-2016, Dr. Oliva taught Linguistics, French and Italian (for Spanish Speakers) as well as Intercomprehension at California State University, Long Beach. He served as the Language Program and Teaching Associate Program Coordinator for the department of Romance, German, Russian, Languages and Literatures. In his function as Program Coordinator at CSULB, in spring 2016, Dr. Oliva was coordinating all 6 languages (Arabic, French, German, Italian, Russian, and Spanish) directing up to 48 sections of lower-division per semester and training over 120 Graduate Teaching Associates.
Cedric Joseph is the author of two textbooks currently on their 2nd editions as California State University electronic publications and is currently working on a third textbook.

Dr. Oliva led several projects on the applicability of Intercomprehension through the knowledge of Spanish and English for L3 learners in Southern California and the USA in general. This project aims to develop, improve and adapt language teaching strategies and course offerings to fit the needs of culturally and linguistically diverse student populations such as CSULB, and many other Hispanic Serving Institutions in the state of California. These project highlights Dr. Oliva’s effort to pedagogically serve students whose neglected bilingualism (English-Spanish) should, in fact, put them at an advantage when learning a related L3 such as French, Italian or Portuguese.
This research has resulted in a series of publications; including two supplemental e-textbooks titled Juntos: Italian for Speaker of English and Spanish (2014) and its French version (2015), as well as eight articles (authored and co-authored) on teaching strategies, including an ADFL Bulletin article co-authored with Dr. Clorinda Donato entitled: “The Future Is Multilingual: French, Italian, and Portuguese for Spanish Speakers” and a coauthored chapter with Dr. Alexandra Jaffe on Linguistic Creativity, an Oxford University Press publication.
Since 2014, Dr. Oliva’s work on language teaching pedagogy led him to be invited to present at the Calandra Institute (CUNY), the Universities of California Irvine, Riverside and Santa Barbara, several Community Colleges: LBCC, EL Camino and Southwestern, as well as several high schools in Southern California. He also presented and will be presenting on this topic at several conferences: the 2014 CERCLL at Arizona State, “A Road to Multilingualism: Teaching Italian to Speakers of English and Spanish through Intercomprehension” at the ‘Teaching Italian Culture’ conference at Georgetown University in October 2015, “Training Teachers for the multilingual classroom” at the 2015 ACTFL convention, and the ‘Colloque Internationale de Français Langue Étrangère (FLE)’ organized at the University of Puerto Rico (2014, 2016 and 2019), the ‘Italian Language Teachers' Workshop (ILT)’ at USC (2017) and a presentation at the Official Languages and Bilingualism housed at the University of Ottawa (2019). Dr. Oliva presents at ACTFL regularly (2015, 2016, 2017 (2), 2018, 2019).
